ALENTEJO LITORAL

Amalia beach. The echo of a fado in the Alentejo

Rescued here an article by San Jose, Francisco, 04/10/2003 edition of the newspaper El País - Section Traveler. The photography is beautiful indeed35mm.org I recommend you see more pictures of this website are wonderful.
SAY AMALIA is say Portugal. And the name most never necessary, because all at once evoke the extraordinary fado singer as "Quando outros you Batem you beijo-te eu" or "Triste sina. It is true that his life was linked to the dictatorship of Oliveira Salazar, but if the great antifascist Zeca Afonso applauded who considered the greatest Portuguese artist, but we should not hear his voice and appreciate the undisputed talent of a remarkable woman.

In the Alentejo coast is a place attached to his memory. It is popularly known beach Praia Amália (if you have or had another name, no one could say), where the singer had a house near the cliff. The house is very discreet, barely visible from a distance and wisely somewhat away from the coastline. Access to both the fifth and the beach is public and well known by locals, although not easy for the stranger.

In the middle of the road between Brejão and Azenha do Mar, there is a dirt road with a strange signal: a metal daisy. The flower was used to warn of the arrival of Dona Amália No one dared disturb his rest. The road stops at the gate and wall, very low, the fifth (note: no dogs), where the residents of nearby villages lit bouquets of flowers with which daily entertained his guest. To the left of the parapet will find a path leading to the beach.

Now we must be careful, walk slowly, take pleasure in the ride. Listen to the birdsong, smell, smells wonderfully well-saturated air of sweetish perfume of shrubs and flowers, drinking water from the source that makes its way through a grove of bamboo, look for the waterway that splits the earth to appear finally plunging into a waterfall, after serving a mill (now ruined).

The beach, like most of the region, is like a bite torn from a wall. Steep, rocky, sometimes sandy, sometimes not, violated by the Atlantic wind, punctuated by the lively waves that leave their foam as a garnish. It is easy to imagine looking at the horizon Amália Rodrigues. Anyone wishing to get here, please do so as gently as possible, do not forget that when in the nearby villages a couple gets married, goes to Praia Amália photographed, as if all the Alentejo coast beauty is blinding This place is inhabited by the legend.
