Roman Ruins Miróbriga



Miróbriga archaeological site is located near the city of Santiago do Cacém.


Referenced in the sixteenth century by André de Resende, Miróbriga the Roman ruins are located in a privileged zone of visibility, allowing you to control territorially throughout a region rich in agricultural resources, marine and mining, one of the reasons played a commercial paper of some importance. Interpreted as a sanctuary, for some authors, and as provincial urban center, for others, Miróbriga was inhabited since at least the Iron Age to the fourth century C., although built structures remain poorly studied, despite their obvious wealth and decorative construtiva.


It was during the Roman period the city center suffered a considerable ampliacón through the implementation of a broad constructive program. Thus, in the highest part of Miróbriga, lifted the forum, in the center of which is vis ible eventually a temple dedicated to the imperial cult, and another dedicated to Venus.Meanwhile, surrounding the forum, develops the whole area made up of several buildings of functionality still poorly known, similarly, still, two of the most common buildings in the provincial nuclei, bone, curiosity and the basilica. South, meanwhile, unfolded the commercial area, par excellence, characterized by the presence of various shops, taverns called. One of the most well-preserved complex Miróbriga are the baths, two buildings built at different times, possibly intended for use by male and female. Between I and II d. C., arise compartments usual in this type of building, I mean, an entrance area, with costumes and games rooms, and cold bathing areas - frigidarium - and hot baths - and tepidarium caldarium. S relatively near e situation is also a single arch bridge full turn, while away from the center, is the race track, fully recognized configuration. Currently, he is already in full operation the Welcome Center and Interpretive Center, built by the IPPAR, and performed in the field of philosophy of intervention in archaeological monuments visited, aiming to create essential infrastructure to improve the site interpretation visited, while regulating and disciplining the flow of visit.
